beauty in nature is fleeting. on a visit to the botanical gardens in sydney, i was struck by the intensity of wildflowers in full bloom; weeks later they were cut down, their destruction as dramatic as their arrival. that briefness stayed with me. in this artwork, i wanted to embody that tension; the moment when something beautiful reveals its fragility, and that fragility becomes its curse. in the studio, i think about how we respond to beauty socially: how easily we’re seduced by it, how it fades as we age, and how my own understanding of beauty continues to alter over time.

a metaphor on life or an abstract landscape. you decide. waves come in all shapes and sizes, some make it all the way to the shore and some waves are so far out they are never seen. this piece embodies the continual energy that can pick us up or knock us back down.

as a sydneysider, it is hard not to have spent a lot of time on and around our sydney harbour. from the rhythmic motion of the water to the seafaring vessels, to the breeze hitting the trees along the shore; my aim was to capture the ever-present movement. when working on this piece, i wanted to offer a shifting perspective; capturing the feeling of either looking down from above, or out from a ferry, or across from the opera house, or simply being mesmerized by the sun twinkling off the water.

i have always been mesmerized with dusk. there is a short window when the sun falls, and night is soon to be upon us. there is movement as the world readies itself for darkness. birds flying to their nests, the breeze through the gums seems different at this time of the day. lights start to to flicker on the in valley, and the suns last rays bounce off the cityscape. there is hum. 

do you have your head in the clouds. are you thinking of something, anything that differs from what is the daily grind. do yo want to be free of the constraints of society. you’re not alone and you shouldn’t feel alone. there are others.

is truth man-made. do we try and seek the truth or do we just go about our lives acting like we know what we are doing. this is the reason i paint abstract. to find my own sense of truth in the world. i beleive that humans have created a system that suits the few but casually forgets everyone else. we may never know the truth.
